Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret is named after Bergen Port Authority, which had offices in the building from 1975 to 2005. The monumental graystone building in neo-Baroque style was designed by architect C.C.A Michalsen and was erected from 1916-20 by shipowner Thorvald Halvorsen (1879–1950) as offices for Det NordenfjeldskeDampskibsselskap.

The building has been preserved and is one of few remaining structures after the explosion disaster that struck Bergenhus fortress in 1944. The building is situated in a historic area next to Håkonshallen and the Rosenkrantz Tower.

The building was bought by the Port Authority in 1975 and used for offices until 2005 when it was bought by Arne Veidung and FAV Gruppen with the intention to convert the office building to a hotel. This is a nod to the past where there used to be situated a hotel in the late 1800’s on the same plot. The original name was Hotel Nordkapp and it was bought by beer and wine agent Herman Steensæth in around 1900 who renamed it Hotel Royal. He also acquired neighboring properties, which at the time housed Den Gyldne Vintønne, a combined tavern and brothel. Over the following years, the hotel business was expanded and the neighboring properties were included in the operation. The entire building complex was sold in 1915 to Thorvald Halvorsen and cleared in favor of the building we now know as Hotel Havnekontoret.

The shipowner’s opulent office, complete with an Italian marble fireplace and handcrafted décor, now serves as the hotel’s most exclusive suite, the “Veidung Suite.” Comprising this and other deluxe accommodations, the hotel offers 113 rooms, including 81 suites.

Since its opening on May 2, 2006, Hotel Havnekontoret has received numerous accolades for its restoration and exceptional hospitality. A stay here promises a blend of historical elegance and modern luxury.
