The Port Office, Hotel Clarion Collection, is named after Bergen and Omland Havnevesen, which had offices from 1975 to 2005. Architect C. C. A. Michalsen designed the building in the northern European Renaissance for Nordenfjeldske's Steamship Company. The archive by the Building Manager, Bergen City Archive.
The Port Office, Hotel Clarion Collection, Slottsgaten 1, fashionable hotel in a historic setting on Bryggen, opened on 2 May 2006 in a building that previously included has housed Bergen and Omland Havnevesen (hence the name) and the head office of the Hurtigruten shipping company Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskap. Of the hotel's 116 rooms, only 32 are standard rooms. The others have all been upgraded to more luxurious categories. Hotel Havnekontoret is affiliated with the Nordic Choice Hotels chain.
The neo-baroque, monumental gray stone building (arch. Eystein Michalsen) was built 1916–20 by shipowner Thorvald Halvorsen (1879–1950) as offices for Det Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskap. Today, the shipowner's office, equipped with an impressive Italian marble fireplace, serves as an exclusive hotel suite. The office, like the building's facade, the tower, the stone staircase leading up to it, and other interior parts worthy of protection are listed. Next to Håkonshallen and Rosenkranztårnet, the house is the only one left after the explosion disaster that hit the area near Bergenhus in 1944. Except for the protected areas, the building has been completely renovated.
The building was taken over by the Port Authority in 1975 and used as an office until 2005. The building was then bought by the businessman Arne Veidung with the intention of hotel operations. With it, old traditions in a historic district were revived. Also, at the end of the 19th century, Slottsgaten 1 was the hotel address, then for Hotell Nordkapp. Beer and wine agent Herman Steensæth bought the hotel around 1900 and renamed it, Hotel Royal. He also acquired the neighboring properties that once housed Den Gyldne Vintønne, one of the city's combined pubs and brothels. The hotel business was expanded in the following years, and the neighboring properties were included in the operation. In 1915, the entire property was sold to Thorvald Halvorsen. Today, it has become a distinguished framework for modern hotel operations.
